University of East Anglia, Norwich Medical School provides the medicine (A100) and Medicine with gateway year (A104) courses that require UCAT.


A high score is advantageous, however a low score does not disqualify an applicant from consideration.

Subsection scores may be used to rank applicants for interview alongside other required qualifications.

Overall cognitive score is used alongside interview score for offer-making. SJT is used within interview score for offer-making.

While UEA doesn't have a minimum UCAT score, the lowest score invited to a interview in 2019 was 2030.

Personal Statement

The personal statement is not scored but a commitment to studying medicine is expected.

Academic Requirements

GCSE Requirements

GCSE Requrements for University of East Anglia, Norwich Medical School are:

  • Maths - Grade 7 minimum 
  • English - Grade 6 minimum
  • Science - Grade 7 minimum in two sciences or Dual Award Science
  • Other requiremants - 6 GCSEs at grade 7 or above minimum, including Mathematics and either two single science subjects (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) or Double Science

GCSEs are not scored. Only minimum requirements needed.

Only one of the following will be accepted: Learning for Life & Work, Expressive Arts, Catering, Child Development, Business & Communication Systems (ICAA), Health & Social Care and Leisure & Tourism. 

A-levels or Scottish Higher requirements.

AAA at A level including Biology/ Human Biology or Chemistry. General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted. Science A levels must include a pass in the practical element. A level re-sits will be considered if a minimum of ABB/AAC is achieved in the first sitting over two consecutive years and predicted to achieve at least one A* in any subject where less than an A was achieved previously. Subjects that are not accepted: Critical Thinking, Citizenship Studies, Leisure Studies, Applied Science, General Studies, BTEC qualifications. Only one of Mathematics or Further Mathematics will be accepted, not both.

BBB at Advanced Higher including Biology or Chemistry in the first sitting or AB in Advanced Highers including Biology or Chemistry plus an additional Higher Level at grade A taken in Secondary Six (S6), in the first sitting.
International Baccalaureate

36 points overall with Higher Level 6,6,6 including Biology or Chemistry.

International Baccalaureate Middle Years is accepted in lieu of GCSEs with a minimum of 6 passes at grade 6 including Mathematics and Science. English language required at grade 5.

Graduate Applicant Degree Requirements

Predicted or achieved 2:1 degree in any subject, with a minimum of BBB/ABC at A level in the first sitting. Applicants need to demonstrate competence in Biology or Chemistry. This can be demonstrated by: Achieving grade B in A Level Biology or Chemistry OR through undergraduate level study of Biology/Physiology or Chemistry or equivalent as part of their degree (65% requirement) OR through an Approved Access course. Graduates are required to hold six GCSEs at grade 6 or grade B or above, including Mathematics, English Language and either two single science subjects (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) or Double Science. Alternatively Science, Additional Science and Further Science GCSEs are accepted.

Widening Participation

The medical school runs the Medical Aspirations Programme, supporting Year 12 students on their path to study medicine. 

The Medicine with gateway year (A104) course is also part of Newcastle's widening participation.
