Brighton and Sussex Medical School in Brighton, England provides a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course.


BSMS scores the BMAT out of 28 (9 marks for Section 1, 9 for Section 2 and 5 marks for each element of Section 3) we then rank all applicants according to their total score out of 28 and work down the rankings to fill our interview places. The cut off score will vary each year.

The cut-off score has varied over the past few years from 14.7 (2020) to 17.3 (2017).

GCSE Requirements

GCSE Requrements for Brighton and Sussex Medical School are:

  • Maths - Grade 6 minimum or Grade 5 for Widening Participation
  • English -Grade 6 minimum or Grade 5 for Widening Participation
  • Science - No requirements
  • Other requiremants - No other requirements

GCSEs are not scored. Only minimum requirements needed

A-levels or Scottish Higher requirements.

AAA at A Level including Biology and Chemistry. These grades cannot include A Levels in General Studies or Critical Thinking. For those that meet the WP criteria, they will accept AAB at A-level (including Biology and Chemistry).

AAA in Advanced Highers including Biology and Chemistry.

International Baccalaureate

36 points including Biology and Chemistry at Higher level at grade 6. For widening participation applicants they will accept 35 points.

Graduate Applicant Degree Requirements

Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, a first or upper second class science degree and be able to demonstrate an adequate knowledge of Biology and Chemistry equivalent to A-level. This may be achieved through having studied these subjects to A-level or through relevant degree modules. Graduate entrants are assessed on their recent achievement and do not have to satisfy normal entry requirements, however the GCSE English and Maths requirements must still be met. 

If you hold (or expect to hold) a first or upper second class honours degree but do not have the necessary knowledge of Biology and Chemistry, you should consider entry via the Access to Medicine route.

Widening Participation

BrightMed and BrightIdeas are widening participation programmes aimed at supporting young people from non-traditional and disadvantaged backgrounds to make a competitive application to medicine. See website for details.

Along with assessing the candidate's academic profile, any contextual data that may enhance the application will also be sought.

BSMS aims to give 30% of its interviews and offer at least 50 places to applicants who meet WP criteria.

Applicants who meet WP criteria will receive an offer of AAB at A level (35 points IB) along with GCSE maths and English at grade 5 (C).
