The Brighton and Sussex Medical School does not use personal statements in any part of the selection process.

Academic Requirements

GCSE Requirements

GCSE Requirements for Brighton and Sussex Medical School are:

  • Maths - Grade 5/C 
  • English -Grade 5/C
  • Science - No requirements
  • Other requirements - No other requirements

GCSEs are not scored do only minimum requirements are needed

A-levels or Scottish Higher requirements.

AAA at A Level including Biology or Chemistry and one further subject from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics). These grades cannot include A Levels in General Studies or Critical Thinking. For those that meet the WP criteria, they will accept AAB at A-level (including Biology and Chemistry).

Pass Scottish Advanced Highers with grades AAA to include Biology or Chemistry and one further subject from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics. Or, pass Advanced Highers with grade A in Biology or Chemistry and grade A from one further Advanced Higher subject from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics. You must also have grades A in two additional Higher subjects. English and Maths requirements: grades B or above in National 5s in English and Maths.

International Baccalaureate

36 points including Biology and Chemistry at Higher level at grade 6. For widening participation applicants they will accept 35 points.

Graduate Applicant Degree Requirements

Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, a first or upper second class science degree and have achieved BBB at A-Level, including Chemistry and Biology. The GCSE English and Maths requirements must still be met.

If you hold (or expect to hold) a first or upper second class honours degree but do not have the necessary knowledge of Biology and Chemistry, you should consider entry via the Access to Medicine route.
