From 2025, Lancaster Medical School will be using UCAT (The University Clinical Aptitude Test) as part of their application process

Personal Statement

Not assessed but may be used as part of the interview.

You must have engaged in some relevant work experience and undertaken voluntary work, preferably in a caring environment. You must write about these experiences in your personal statement and reflect on what you learned about being a doctor and about yourself from these experiences.

After interview, they may aim to verify work and voluntary experiences discussed in the applicant's personal statement.

Academic Requirements

GCSE Requirements

GCSE Requirements for Lancaster University Medical School are:

Maths - Grade 6 minimum
English - Grade 6 minimum
Science - Grade 6 minimum in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (or Core & Additional Science)
Other requirements - If Biology or Chemistry is not studied at A-level, then GCSE must be at least grade 7.
All other subjects must be at least grade 4.

8 GCSEs are scored, with 7-9 = 2 points and 6 = 1 point. A minimum score of 13 is required, beyond which GCSEs are not used in selection for interview

A-levels or Scottish Higher requirements.

AAA at A level including two from Biology, Chemistry and Psychology, or AAB with a B in a fourth subject or EPQ. Applicants who fulfil two or more widening participation criteria, may be considered for a contextual offer of ABB. General Studies is only accepted as a fourth AS-Level subject.

At least 5 subjects taken after one year of study including Biology (A), Chemistry (A) with minimum grades of AAAAB. Advanced Highers of AA including Biology and Chemistry also required. At least seven National 5s at A or B, Standard Grade Credits at 1 or 2 or Intermediate at A or B are required.

International Baccalaureate

36 points overall with a minimum of 6 in three Higher Level subjects including any two of Biology, Chemistry and Psychology and a minimum of 5 in three Standard Level subjects. Lancaster will consider applications from those who have taken longer than the standard two years to complete the programme, but the reasons for this must be reflected on in the personal statement. Applications from students who have taken longer than three years to achieve the required grades will not be considered.

Graduate Applicant Degree Requirements

65% transcript average in Biomedical/Health Sciences degree plus a minimum of BBB at A-level including any 2 of Biology, Chemistry and Psychology Alternatively, candidates can apply with a 65% transcript average in any other subject plus AAB at A-level including any 2 of Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. All graduate applicants must meet the GCSE requirements.

Widening Participation
