University of Leicester Medical School provides the Medicine (A100) and Medicine with gateway year (A199) courses.

UCAT

Interviews awarded by 50% UCAT + 50% academic ability. 8 GCSE grades are scored. The exact scoring system differs for those with achieved A-Level or IB results, with 10 points available for each A* or A achieved.

Those who scored SJT Band 4 will not be invited to interview.

In 2023, the UCAT cut off was 2,250

Personal Statement

Not routinely read except for the Access to Medicine entry pathway, although they can be used in a borderline or tiebreaker situation.

Academic Requirements

GCSE Requirements

GCSE Requirements for University of Leicester Medical School are:

  • Maths - Grade 6 minimum
  • English - Grade 6 minimum
  • Science - Grade 6 minimum in Biology and Chemistry or Dual Award Science
  • Other requirements - No other requirements
A-levels or Scottish Higher requirements.

A*AA at A level including Chemistry or Biology and one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology or Maths but excluding General Studies, Citizenship Studies, Critical Thinking or Global Perspectives (The A* needs to be in one of the sciences). Also consider AAA provided you have an A in Chemistry or Biology.

AAA at Advanced Higher including Chemistry or Biology and one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology or Maths. They will also consider the two sciences at Advanced Higher (grade AA) plus three other subjects at Highers level (grades AAB).

They will not consider applicants who only take Scottish Highers.

International Baccalaureate

They accept the International Baccalaureate (IB) with a minimum score of 34 points overall, and a minimum score of 7,6,6 in three Higher Level subjects including Chemistry or Biology, and one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. The 7 would need to be in one of the sciences as mentioned above

Graduate Applicant Degree Requirements

Applicants with a 2:1 degree in any discipline plus an A-level grade of BBB/ABC including a grade B or higher Chemistry or Biology will be considered.

Widening Participation

Contextual data will be used in selecting for interview and at offer stage. As well as giving adjusted criteria for students on the Realising Opportunities Programme and AccessLeicester: Medicine programmes, those on these access programmes are automatically invited to interview providing they are not in the lowest two deciles of UCAT and do not have band 4 in the SJT.
