New Online Learning Platform Feature – UCAT 'Slow Load Mode'

6 months ago by Chris
We’re excited to announce a highly requested feature on our UCAT Online Learning Platform – Slow Load Mode. This new setting is designed to better replicate the experience of taking the live UCAT exam.
Although the experience of students differs depending on the exact testing location, some of our students sitting the UCAT have reported that their live UCAT platform experienced a 'lag' when pressing a button or using a keyboard shortcut. That is, the platform does not respond immediately, and there is a slight delay. This is due to factors such as system processing, hardware and internet connection in the official UCAT.
MedEntry’s new Slow Load Mode simulates the ‘lag’ that students experience in the live UCAT, helping you prepare under more realistic conditions.
What is Slow Load Mode?
When enabled, Slow Load Mode introduces slight delays that mimic the live UCAT test environment as reported by our students. This includes:
- A slight delay (less than 0.5s) before the next question appears when selecting Next (Alt +N keyboard shortcut) or Previous (Alt + P keyboard shortcut). This delay is also present when moving between instruction screens.
- A ~1-second delay after opening the on-screen calculator before it becomes usable.
This setting is not a default, and students can turn it on and off as required.
Why Use Slow Load Mode?
Practicing with instant load times can create an unrealistic expectation of speed. Students practicing on platforms with instant load times are at risk of being surprised when they sit the live UCAT, and it may cause issues with their exam timing.
Enabling Slow Load Mode can help you adjust to these conditions in advance. This is especially beneficial once you are comfortable with the format of UCAT questions and are incorporating timed practice into your preparation.
However, note that other factors (e.g., computer speed, internet connection, distance from servers) can impact both MedEntry UCAT mock and live UCAT speed. Delays you experience during the official exam may be slightly faster or slower based on these factors.
How to Enable Slow Load Mode
You can turn on Slow Load Mode in your account Settings, under the ‘UCAT Practice Exam Options’ tab on the Online Learning Platform. (Currently, this feature is only available on desktop.)
By practicing under simulated exam conditions, you’ll develop effective timing, adaptability, and confidence—giving you the best shot at UCAT success.
