A-Level Results Day and Clearing

A-Level Results Day and Clearing

1 month ago by Chris

A-Level results day is a particularly significant moment for many students, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. It comes with a mix of intense emotions such as excitement, anxiety, uncertainty, and eager anticipation. It’s essential to be well-prepared for results day so that you can anticipate what to expect and understand your next steps.

When is A-level results day?

A-Level results day for students in England, Northern Ireland and Wales is on Thursday 14 August 2025.

In Scotland, students are set to receive their SQA results on Tuesday 5 August 2025.

Results are officially due to be released from 8:00 am onwards, but this can vary based on your school or college. It is also possible that your results may be delivered via e-mail.

What do I need for results day?

If you are going in person to collect your results on results day, it’s a good idea to have a few things handy:

  • Your phone (fully charged)
  • UCAS login details
  • UCAS personal ID
  • Phone numbers for your chosen universities

Having these on hand will allow you to log in to UCAS once you’ve received your results.

What to do on results day if:

UCAS hub doesn’t update

If your UCAS Hub hasn't been updated by mid-morning on results day, it's a good idea to call the university, as they might still be reviewing your application.

You have a confirmed offer

Congratulations! You’ll be sent a confirmation from your firm choice once your UCAS Hub status updates. Treat yourself to some relaxation and a job well done before diving into your course.

You got the grades for medicine but did not secure a place

You might be disappointed, but you still have a chance of getting in! You should immediately consider applying through UCAS clearing. Not all universities offer clearing and medicine is a competitive course, so you need to act quickly. Otherwise, there is always the option of a gap year. You can read more details in our blog here.

You did not get the grades required for medicine

It can be difficult receiving the news that you didn’t receive the grades required for your chosen courses, but there are still options available to you.

Depending on your grades, you should consider applying through clearing, applying through Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM), resitting some of your A-levels or even looking at studying abroad.

What is UCAS Clearing?

UCAS clearing is the method UCAS uses to fill vacant university places for students who did not receive any offers.

UCAS clearing opens on 5 July 2025 and closes 20 October 2025.

You can apply for clearing if you’re not already holding an offer from a university and the course you want to apply for via clearing still has vacant places.

If you’re eligible, you’ll automatically be entered into clearing and given a clearing number on UCAS Hub if:

  • you decided to apply after the 30th of June for a course
  • you didn’t receive any offers, or none that you wanted to accept
  • you didn’t meet the conditions or grades of your offer
  • you’ve declined your firm place in your application

Note that not all medical and dentistry universities offer applications via clearing, and some only accept clearing enquiries online.

Once you've navigated the clearing process, you'll need to attend a university interview. Make sure to refine your interview skills to boost your chances of success.

Final words

A-Level results day can be a whirlwind of emotions, especially for students aspiring to enter competitive fields like medicine and dentistry. By understanding the process and being proactive, you can increase your chances of finding a suitable place and embarking on your journey towards a career in medicine or dentistry.
