Applying to Medical School Strategically: Part 2 - Where to Apply with an Excellent UCAT Score

Apply-Strategically1-NS

In this blog series we are exploring how you should use your UCAT scores when applying for medical school, in order to maximise your chances of securing a place. In this blog we will be focusing on which universities to consider applying to with an excellent UCAT score (705+).

What does my UCAT score mean?

First of all, congratulations on achieving such a fantastic UCAT score! Only 10% of UCAT candidates obtain a score of over 705.

It is important to note that a UCAT score of 705 will not necessarily guarantee you an interview at every medical school. However, applying to universities that place a large emphasis on UCAT will very much improve your chances.

A UCAT score of 705 and a sufficient academic score does almost guarantee an interview offer at universities which require students to sit UCAT.

Where should I apply?

Here are some medical schools where an excellent UCAT score is needed, and where you should consider applying:

Newcastle University Medical School

At Newcastle, applicants are first checked to ensure that the minimum academic requirements are met:

  • AAA predicted
  • No specific A levels required, but General Studies, Use of Mathematics, World Development, Communication and Culture, and Critical Thinking are NOT accepted

Students are then ranked based entirely upon UCAT scores, with the highest scoring individuals invited to interview.

For entry into medicine last year, a UCAT score of 682.5 for A100 and 727.5 for A101 was needed for an invitation to interview. Students who achieved band 4 in the UCAT Situational Judgement subtest were automatically rejected.

University of Bristol Medical School

At Bristol, students are first checked to ensure that the minimum academic requirements are met (AAA predicted, including in Chemistry and either Biology, Physics or Mathematics). Students are then ranked based entirely upon UCAT scores, with the highest scoring individuals invited to interview.

Last year, a score of 672.5 for A100 was needed for an invitation to interview. Students who achieved band 4 in the UCAT Situational Judgement subtest were automatically rejected.

University of Edinburgh Medical School

At Edinburgh, students are first checked to ensure that the minimum academic requirements are met (AAA predicted, including in Chemistry and either Biology/Human Biology, Physics or Mathematics). Students are then ranked with the following weighted criteria:

  • 50% academic score
  • 25% UCAT cognitive subtest score
  • 25% UCAT Situational Judgement Score

The highest scoring candidates are invited to an assessment day.

The assessment day score, academic score, UCAT cognitive subtest score and UCAT Situational Judgement score are then summed together to determine offers. In 2019 Edinburgh stated that the average UCAT score for entry on to their course was 705. The lowest offered place was to a student achieving a UCAT score of 582, although this would require exceptional academic and assessment day scores. At Edinburgh, students who achieve band 4 in the UCAT Situational Judgement subtest face automatic rejection.

Please note that UCAT score thresholds do change year-to-year and are impossible to predict with certainty until after the UCAS October 15th deadline.

Our next blog will be focusing on where to apply to with a high UCAT score. Stay tuned!
